BIOMETRY / OPTICAL BIOMETRY

Precise Eye Measurements for Cataract Surgery

Biometry is a test that measures the dimensions of the eye such as axial length and corneal power to help determine the appropriate power of the lens implant for cataract surgery.

Biometry is part of the pre-operative evaluation for patients who will undergo cataract surgery. The results are interpreted together with the patient’s eye examination, medical history, and other measurements to support surgical planning.

What Is Biometry Used For?

Its primary purpose is to provide measurements needed for surgical planning.

PRIMARY PURPOSE
IOL Power Calculation
Helps determine the appropriate power of the artificial lens to be implanted during cataract surgery.
SURGICAL PLANNING
Cataract Surgery Planning
Provide measurements used you ophthalmologist for planning cataract surgery.
PRE-OPERATIVE
Pre-operative Eye Measurement
Measures dimensions of the eye before surgery.
SURGICAL PLANNING
Refractive Target Planning
Measurements are incorporated into calculations to determine the desired refractive target.

How Does Biometry Work?

During optical biometry, the patient looks at a fixation target while the machine measures the eye. Optical biometry is a non-contact method of measuring axial length.
Axial length — the distance from the front of the eye to the retina
Keratometry / corneal power — measurement of the curvature and refractive power of the cornea
Other anatomical measurements used by the IOL calculation software like white to white and anterior chamber depth.

If optical measurements cannot be obtained reliably—for example, in eyes with very dense cataracts—ultrasound biometry may be used as an alternative or supplementary method.

Who May Need Biometry?

Biometry is needed by patients undergoing cataract surgery.

Diagnostic Tests that may be performed alongside biometry

Depending on the patient’s condition and surgical plan, the ophthalmologist may request additional tests such as:

Visual Acuity Test
Measures clarity of vision
Refraction / Autorefraction
Determines refractive error
Slit Lamp Examination
Examines the front structures of the eye
Tonometry
Measures intraocular pressure
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
Evaluates the retina and optic nerve when indicated
Corneal Topography / Tomography
Provides additional information about corneal shape when needed

Biometry is a diagnostic measurement and does not replace a comprehensive eye examination.

Schedule your eye evaluation

What patients can expect

1
Before the test
  • Bring previous eye examination results, if available.
  • Inform the clinic if you have had previous eye surgery.
  • Inform the staff if you wear contact lenses.
  • Follow any specific instructions given by your ophthalmologist.
2
During the test
  • You will be asked to sit in front of the machine.
  • Look at a fixation target.
  • Then, the device takes measurements of your eye.
  • The procedure is usually quick and non-contact.
3
After the test
  • Your doctor will evaluate the data, and pick the best IOL power for you.
WHY ACCURATE BIOMETRY MATTERS

Accurate measurements are particularly important in modern IOL power calculations

Several factors can affect measurement accuracy, including corneal abnormalities, previous refractive surgery, dense cataracts, and contact lens-related changes in corneal shape. In certain situations, the ophthalmologist may request additional measurements or repeat the biometry.

Ask Us a Question

Biometry is a test for measuring the dimensions of the eye to calculate the appropriate intraocular lens (IOL) power for cataract surgery.

It provides important eye measurements. Your doctor needs to set the most accurate data when selecting your IOL power.

No. It is a non-contact procedure.

No.

The measurement itself is generally quick around 10 to 15 minutes.

Contact lenses can affect corneal measurements, particularly when the cornea has not returned to its stable shape. Your doctor or clinic may advise you to stop wearing your lenses for a specific period before testing.

Some eyes, particularly those with dense cataracts or certain corneal conditions, may be difficult to measure optically. In these situations, another measurement method, called an A-scan, is used.

Yes, but the final IOL selection depends on the complete examination, eye measurements, ocular history, and surgical plan.

Important medical notes

  • Biometry is a diagnostic measurement and does not replace a comprehensive eye examination.
  • Final IOL selection and surgical planning depend on the patient’s complete eye examination, measurements, medical history, and individual circumstances.
  • Some eyes may require additional or alternative measurements if optical biometry cannot obtain reliable results.
  • Patients who wear contact lenses may need to discontinue lens use before certain measurements; the appropriate period varies depending on the type of lens and the patient’s condition.
